Gujarat's mid-day meal: Idli-sambhar
SURAT: The Gujarat government is planning to include idli-sambhar and traditional Gujarati khaman in the menu for 38 lakh children covered under mid-day meal scheme.
This proposal has been under active consideration of the mid-day meal scheme commissionerate which has now directed the deputy collectors in-charge of the scheme to include idli-sambhar and khaman in the list of hot food dishes served every morning in the classrooms.

It is learnt that a team of officials took the decision after their tour of southern states. They felt this would be a good change for the children with whom daal-bhat, khichdi and dhokali are popular recipes.
It is believed that the government will include these food items from the next academic year. In all, Rs. 271 crore, including assistance of Rs 70 crore from the Centre, were spent in the implementation of the scheme last year.
Mid-day meal deputy commissioner RK Machhar said the government has not yet taken any decision to hand over the execution of the scheme to NGOs as was done in Karnataka and some other states. He said Gujarat has perhaps the biggest network of over 86,000 personnel for implementation of the scheme.
The biggest beneficiaries are 10 lakh Adivasi children enrolled in primary schools in tribal belt stretching from Shamlaji to Vapi.
